I spend the rest of the day driving around the small community, but other than look for Lily and her mom, I don’t know what to do. I don’t know what his house looks like, and I don’t see a blue truck.

I have no clue where Lily is.

I have nothing else to go on, and I drive home slowly. I can only hope she shows up at school tomorrow.

If not, I’m calling in some favors.

Chapter Twenty-One

Lily

Early Monday morning, I call the diner from Paul’s home phone.

“Cecil’s Diner,” a man says succinctly.

“Mr. Poole?” I ask.

“Yes. Who’s calling?”

“This is Lily St. James. I’m calling about my shift. Listen, I know I haven’t been to work in a long time, but I was extremely sick. I had pneumonia and am only just now getting better.”

“Ms. St. James, I’m sorry to hear that. Of course, we couldn’t go that long covering your shifts. You’ve been replaced, and I don’t have any openings available.”

“Please, I really need that job! I’ve never missed work before last week and you know I’m a good worker!” I plead.

“I’m sorry. There’s nothing I can do. Perhaps check back at a later time. Goodbye.”

He hangs up the phone and I hang my head, closing my eyes against the disappointment. If I’m going to have any chance of getting out of here soon, I need money. I have to start looking for another job right away.

I go to the kitchen after listening for movement. It is still early, and I suppose he is still asleep. I grab a yogurt from his fridge and a spoon. I eat quietly in my room.

I decide to get dressed and go to the store. I need a bra desperately. I could walk to school from there. I may even have time to find a newspaper to look for a job.
